International Ladies Garment Workers Union goes out on strike.

February 28, 1936

(Feb.) Demanding closed shops, higher wages, and shorter hours, some 4,000 members of the Boston local form what is described as a “living Crusade” against sweatshops. After two months of demonstrations, picketing, and violent confrontations with strikebreakers and police along Kneeland Street and Harrison Avenue, the workers, many of them who work at 31 Harrison Avenue, achieve their demands, which include a closed shop, 40-hour week (down from 52 hours), and an increased minimum wage.
